Move to remove all regulations that prevent women from working at night

The Cabinet has agreed to amend the Shops and Offices Act to provide the opportunity for night shift for women engaged in IT related industries.

The related proposal was presented by the Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment Mr. Manusha Nanayakkara.

The Shops and Offices Act is to be amended to enable women in IT-related industries to work in foreign countries according to the time zone.

The amendment allows women above the age of 18 to work in IT-related industries before 06:00 am and after 06:00 pm, which was earlier prevented through the Shops and Offices Act.

Previously, women over 18 were only allowed to work in certain industries such as airport services and hotels until 08:00 pm.

It is reported that the Minister of Labor hopes to remove all regulations that prevent women from working at night and further strengthen the female workforce in Sri Lanka.
