Driving of heavy vehicles is temporarily prohibited on the Radella short road - Air Force assistance to transport patients (VIDEO)

Nuwara Eliya District Secretary Mr. Nandana Galaboda says that heavy vehicles have been temporarily banned from today (21) on the Nanu Oya shortcut on the Nuwara Eliya Hatton main road.

Heavy vehicles traveling on that road have been informed to drive through the Nanu Oya Kirimatiya road.

Apart from this, the district secretary also mentioned that he will discuss with the relevant parties regarding the complete ban of heavy vehicles on Nanu Oya Short Road.

President Ranil Wickramasinghe has instructed the relevant officials to provide all necessary assistance to the students injured in the Nanu Oya accident and to provide all necessary assistance to the Air Force to bring the students who are in serious condition to Colombo.

Accordingly, if necessary, an MI-17 type helicopter will be kept ready at the Ratmalana Air Force Base to bring the victims of the Nanu Oya accident to Colombo for further treatment, the Air Force spokesperson said.

Yesterday (20th) at around 7pm, a private bus carrying a group of school children from Nuwara Eliya to Colombo collided with a van and a three-wheeler traveling in the opposite direction on the Radella Short Road in Karburg Watta area.

Later, the van, the three-wheeler and the bus overtu ed in the tea garden, five members of the same family traveling in the van and the driver of the van as well as the driver of the three-wheeler were killed on the spot.
41 school children who were traveling in the bus were injured and admitted to the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital.
At the time of the van accident, 09 people were traveling in the van, six of them died and three others were admitted to the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital with serious injuries.

The police said that the three-wheeler driver who died in the accident was a 27-year-old resident of Nanu Oya area, and the driver of the van was a resident of Hatton Kudagama area.

It is said that the five members of the same family who died in the accident were residents of Hatton Dik Oya area and the group met with this accident while visiting a sick relative in Nuwara Eliya area.
