The Department of Immigration and Emigration says that Sri Lankans living abroad can renew their passports online from June 1 for a new passport.

Accordingly, Sri Lankans living abroad can apply for passports online without visiting the Sri Lankan embassies in their countries, officials of the Immigration and Emigration Department said at a meeting of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Inte ational Relations.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Committee, Member of Parliament Namal Rajapakse has given instructions to the officials to speed up the process of introducing electronic passports.
 
It has also discussed various issues including the shortcomings of the online visa application process.

The chairman of the committee instructed the officials to speedily prepare and implement the necessary mechanism for foreigners to get visas easily, and to take necessary steps to further improve the facilities for locals and foreigners at Sri Lanka's inte ational airports.
