Japan is currently experiencing a significant outbreak of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), a rare but serious bacterial infection.
As of early June 2024, the country has recorded 977 cases, surpassing last year's record of 941 cases.
STSS, caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria, can quickly become fatal, with symptoms progressing from fever and muscle pain to organ failure and shock within 48 hours. The mortality rate can reach up to 30%.
The rise in cases is partly attributed to the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, which had previously helped reduce the spread of such infections.
Experts are still investigating the exact cause of this year's surge. Preventative measures like maintaining good hand hygiene and promptly treating open wounds are strongly recommended to mitigate the spread.
