T20 World Cup 2024 | Afghanistan Qualifies for First World Cup Semi-Final in Historic Win Over Bangladesh

In a landmark moment for Afghan cricket, Afghanistan has qualified for the semi-finals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup for the first time.

The thrilling victory came in a tense, low-scoring match against Bangladesh in St Vincent, securing their place as runners-up in Super 8s Group 1.

Afghanistan batted first, posting a modest total of 115-5 in 20 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scored with 43 runs off 55 balls, anchoring the innings amidst a tight bowling display by Bangladesh, with Rishad taking 3-26. In response, Bangladesh struggled against Afghanistan's disciplined bowling attack and was bowled out for 105 in 17.5 overs. Liton Das remained unbeaten with 54 off 49 balls, but it wasn't enough as Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq took four wickets each, with Rashid's 4-23 and Naveen's 4-26 proving decisive.

The match ended with Afghanistan winning by eight runs under the DLS method, a result that not only propelled them into the semi-finals but also eliminated Bangladesh and tou ament heavyweights Australia from the competition.

This victory means Afghanistan will now face South Africa in Trinidad on Thursday (01:30 BST). A win there would see them advance to the final, where they would meet either defending champions England or India on Saturday.
