The National STD and AIDS Control Program reports a rise in HIV infections among young people, with 15% of new cases last year occurring in the 15–24 age group.
Community Health Specialist Dr. Vindya Kumaripelli, speaking at a media conference at the Health Promotion Bureau, highlighted contributing factors such as the use of mobile phones and new technologies to find partners, insufficient sex education, and drug addiction.
In 2023, 694 new HIV infections were reported in Sri Lanka, reflecting a rapid increase in cases, particularly among young individuals, according to Dr. Kumaripelli.
