The Cabinet has approved the formal disposal of luxury vehicles used in state institutions, which have become a significant financial burden due to their high maintenance and fuel costs.
Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa made the announcement at a media briefing today (03), stating that the decision was made after evaluating the economic impact of these vehicles. Minister Jayatissa emphasized that it was found to be more cost-effective to dispose of certain luxury vehicles rather than continue maintaining them.
As part of the decision, a proposal submitted by the President was approved. It includes conducting a study of all vehicles in gove ment institutions, with a focus on those with petrol engine capacities above 1800cc and diesel engine capacities above 2300cc. These vehicles, excluding double cabs, single cabs, vans, and buses, will be disposed of according to a formal procedure.
The Secretary to the Treasury has been authorized to issue circular instructions for the disposal process, which must be completed by March 1, 2025. Chief Accounting Officers in relevant institutions will be responsible for ensuring the procedure is followed and reporting to the Comptroller General of the Treasury.
