Kenya Police Use Tear Gas on Antigovernment Protesters During Nane Nane March in Nairobi

Kenyan police fired tear gas in central Nairobi as small groups gathered for the “Nane Nane” protest on August 8, yesterday.

The demonstration, named after the date, followed weeks of unrest against President William Ruto's administration.

The protests, driven mainly by young Kenyans, began in June over proposed tax hikes, leading to the firing of most of Ruto’s cabinet.

Despite the gove ment's recent concessions, tensions remain high, with police accused of excessive force, resulting in over 50 deaths since the protests started.
