A new study by Australian scientists has found that ocean temperatures around the Great Barrier Reef have reached their highest levels in 400 years over the past decade, driven by human-induced climate change.
The study, published in 'Nature' highlights that the once-stable temperatures around the 2,400km-long coral ecosystem have sharply increased, leading to repeated mass coral bleaching events since 2016.
Researchers wa that this warming trend poses a critical threat to the survival of the world's largest living ecosystem, describing the situation as a significant loss of one of Earth's natural icons.
