Deputy Inspector General of Police and Police Media Spokesman, Nihal Thalduwa, announced at a special press conference today (14) that 49 individuals were arrested for breaching rules related to the 2024 parliamentary election.
Among those detained were two candidates from Kalpitiya and Vavuniya, with the majority involved in illegal campaigning activities. Other reported violations included incidents of bribery, ballot paper tampering, unauthorized photography, and physical assaults.
Thalduwa also mentioned that a police officer was removed from duty for failing to assist a voter appropriately. He reminded the public that only authorized individuals are allowed into counting centers, and even authorized personnel will be denied entry if intoxicated or in possession of a mobile phone.
The Police Spokesman further emphasized that large gatherings to view election results on digital screens are strictly prohibited. Security forces will disperse any such gatherings to maintain order.
