Sweden has confirmed its first case of the Mpox clade I variant, a more dangerous strain of the virus, marking the first occurrence outside of Africa.
Health and Social Affairs Minister Jakob Forssmed announced the development yesterday, with additional cases anticipated in the region.
The individual contracted the virus while traveling in an area of Africa currently experiencing a significant outbreak.
The World Health Organization has declared the situation a global public health emergency following a recent outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Despite the new case, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control maintains that the risk to the general population remains very low.
