In central Thailand, a 36-year-old elephant named Chamchuri gave birth to rare twins at the Ayutthaya Elephant Palace and Royal Kraal.
Initially, staff thought the delivery was complete after the male calf was bo , but a second, female calf was unexpectedly delivered shortly after.
According to the Save the Elephants organization, twins occur in only one percent of elephant births, with male-female pairs being even rarer.
The female calf, weighing 55kg, is slightly smaller than her 60kg brother and needs assistance during feeding.
They will be named seven days after birth as per Thai tradition.
