World Thalassemia Day falls today (08).
This year's theme is 'Unifying communities with Thalassemia, prioritizing patients'.
The Ministry of Health says that between 2000 and 2500 children in the country are affected by thalassemia.
Specialist Dr. Samiddi Samarakoon, Director of the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit of the Ministry, stated that between 40 and 50 children bo in the country each year are identified as thalassemia patients.
It has also been identified that there are about 500,000 carriers of thalassemia.
