The Ministry of Justice and Prison Affairs has planned to implement a program this year to put people guilty of civil offenses under house arrest.
Commenting on this matter, State Minister Anuradha Jayaratne said that under the relevant program, the persons kept under house arrest will be monitored through GPS technology.
Addressing jou alists in Kandy, he said that this was planned to be implemented with the aim of reducing overcrowding in prisons.
Accordingly, in order to keep them under house arrest and comply with the conditions imposed by the court, the convicts are to be monitored by the prison officials and the nearest police station.
In this regard, the State Minister stated that the Law Drafting Department is drafting the necessary laws and will submit them to the Parliament after completion.
