The Cabinet has approved the amendment to the Universities Act.

It is reported that the proposal submitted by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, in his capacity as Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, to instruct the Legal Draftsman to prepare a draft bill to amend the said Act has received Cabinet approval.

The Universities Act No. 16 of 1978 was last amended by the Universities (Amendment) Act No. 17 of 2016.
