The first session of the 10th Parliament is set to begin today (21), with proceedings scheduled to commence at 10 a.m.
The session will open with the election of the Speaker, followed by the official oath-taking of the Speaker and Members of Parliament. The Deputy Speaker and Deputy Committee Chairman will also be elected during the session.
On this inaugural day, MPs will not have assigned seating and can sit freely. After the initial proceedings, the Parliament will take a brief recess, and at 11:30 a.m., President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is slated to deliver the gove ment’s policy statement from the chair of the House.
The session will be held with formal simplicity, as instructed by the President, without traditional features such as Jayamangala chants, military salutes, or motorcades.
All guests are expected to be seated by 11:00 a.m., with the Speaker arriving at 11:10 a.m., followed by the Prime Minister. At 11:20 a.m., Speaker and Secretary General Kushani Rohanadeera will officially welcome the President at the Parliament's main steps.
