Bangladesh Quota Protests Escalate into Nationwide Unrest Amid Government Crackdown

For three days, Ahsan Habib, a private university student, protested in Dhaka against what he believes was a violent assault by police and ruling party supporters.

Initially focused on reforming the gove ment’s job quota system, the protests have escalated into nationwide unrest, demanding accountability from the gove ment for the violence that left at least 131 people dead.

The Supreme Court has since scrapped most of the quotas, but student leaders continue to call for the release of jailed protesters and the resignation of officials responsible for the violence.

Most casualties were students and ordinary citizens in Dhaka. The clashes saw protesters using bricks against police and ruling party supporters armed with live bullets.
