The Board of Directors of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has decided not to grant a bonus to its employees, despite a request from the CEB employees' union, affiliated with the National People's Power (NWP).
According to CEB Media Spokesperson Dhanushka Parakramasinghe, the decision was finalized after considering financial priorities. While the CEB recorded significant profits this year, Rs. 112 billion were allocated to repay loans, including those owed to the Petroleum Corporation, and the remaining Rs. 41 billion was used to reduce electricity tariffs.
Ranjan Jayalal, General Secretary of the CEB, argued that employees deserve a bonus, especially under the current gove ment, which represents their trade union. However, the Board maintained that the funds were already committed to addressing critical financial obligations and reducing costs for consumers.
As a result, the Board has confirmed that no bonus will be issued this year, citing the pressing need to stabilize finances.
