The government has planned to introduce an accident insurance scheme for the fishing community.
This is with the aim of developing the fishing industry and improving the living standards of the fishermen.
The fishing community engaged in the fishing industry is exposed to a high level of accidents due to the hazardous nature of their work.
The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board stated that the new government has introduced this insurance scheme to cover accidents and enable fishermen to engage in the industry full-time.
It is expected that this accident insurance scheme will be implemented annually for the fishing community under the legal powers vested in the Board to implement pension schemes for the fishing community by the Fishermen's Pension and Social Security Benefits Act No. 23 of 1990.
