Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has called on Indian Exte al Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to intervene following two recent incidents where Tamil Nadu fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy.
According to the Deccan Herald, Stalin urged swift diplomatic action to prevent further arrests and expedite the release of all fishermen and boats in Sri Lankan custody.
The arrests, on November 9 and 11, have sparked conce in Tamil Nadu. Stalin highlighted that these apprehensions in 2024 mark the highest number in seven years, severely impacting fishermen's livelihoods and their families' welfare.
On November 9, twenty-three fishermen from Rameswaram and three boats were detained, followed by the November 12 arrest of twelve fishermen and a boat from Nagapattinam. PMK founder S. Ramadoss criticized the recurring arrests and called for an early resolution, suggesting a meeting between Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen as discussed in the joint working group meeting scheduled for November 29.
