Patients have been severely affected by the failure of 3 linear accelerator machines that provide radiation treatment to cancer patients at the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama.
It is also reported that there are 05 such machines at the Apeksha Hospital.
Chanaka Dharmawickrama, President of the Government Radiology Technologists Association, stated that the machines have been out of order since last week.
He further said that due to this, the treatment of about 250 patients has been disrupted daily.
When signing the contract for the maintenance of the machines, a condition has been imposed that the machines should be restored to normal within 03 days of their failure.
Failure to do so will result in a surcharge of 01% of the contracted amount per day being charged to the relevant company.
However, the chairman stated that the Ministry of Health has not taken any action to collect such surcharges from the relevant service companies in the past.
