The public has been alerted to the spread of the new covid virus strain JN.1, a sub-strain of Omicron.
Dr. Chandima Jeevandara, Director of Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology Department of Sri Jayewardenepura University posted a note on 'X' social media and said that it is suspected that the virus is already in the community.
Dr. Jeevanda also said that there is no risk to the health system of Sri Lanka, that they have successfully managed the previous wave and that the country is prepared in case of an increase in patients.
Accordingly, the professor advises people over the age of 60 and those with weak immunity and other diseases to start wearing face masks.
He also urges people to seek medical attention if symptoms such as fever, cough, loss of smell and taste, high fever, difficulty breathing, fatigue, inability to eat and tendency to vomit persist.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's Covid-19 Coordinator Dr. Anwar Hamdani emphasized that the Ministry is being vigilant and monitoring the situation.
