The Department of Meteorology says that the low-pressure area that has formed in the Bay of Bengal sea area to the southeast of the island is likely to develop into a depression in the next 24 hours.
The department stated that this system is expected to move westwards and northwestwards towards the easte coast of the island.
The fishing and naval community is also requested to be vigilant in this regard.
The statement issued by the Department of Meteorology states that showers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast from Kankesanthurai to Trincomalee and Pottuvil to Matara.
The statement further states that showers or thundershowers may occur at times in the other sea areas around the island during the evening or night.
