A Sri Lankan child has succeeded in becoming the youngest person to win the Mountbatten medal awarded to a Commonwealth citizen.

Kalya Kandegoda Gamage, who lives in South Otago, New Zealand, managed to save his younger brother when he was swept away by a strong wave.

It was when they went canoeing along Crystals Beach.

It is said that this happened on August 27 last year.

At the time of the incident, Kalya was 13 years old and his brother was 11 years old.
