Coconut Shortage in Sri Lanka Linked to Extreme Heat

Sri Lanka is facing a coconut shortage, and the primary reason is the extreme heat experienced during the first few months of the year, according to Senior Professor of Crop Science at the University of Ruhuna, Aruna Kumara.

Prof. Kumara highlighted that the country recorded a sharp rise in temperatures from March to June, which negatively impacted coconut production. 'The ideal temperature for a coconut tree is around 27-28 degrees Celsius, but when this rises above 33 degrees Celsius, the pollination process is hindered, resulting in decreased fruit production,' he explained.

Adding to the crisis, the annual number of coconut plants cultivated in the country has decreased by approximately 7 million. Sri Lanka, known for the highest per capita coconut consumption in the world with an average of 114 coconuts per person annually, is now facing the challenge of sustaining demand.

Prof. Kumara emphasized the importance of implementing immediate and long-term measures to mitigate the shortage. 'In the short term, we need to control animal populations that may contribute to crop loss. For the long term, steps must be taken to boost current harvests and increase coconut cultivation to secure future supply,' he said.

The professor's comments underline the need for urgent action to address the climate and agricultural challenges impacting one of Sri Lanka's staple resources.
