Heavy Rains Push Water Levels in 73 Reservoirs Beyond 65%

The Department of Irrigation has reported that water levels in 73 reservoirs across the island have surpassed 65% due to ongoing heavy rainfall. Spill gates have been opened in several reservoirs, with 23 of them actively discharging water.

Notable districts with reservoirs exceeding 80% capacity include Hambantota, Galle, Kandy, Kurunegala, and Monaragala, while Polonnaruwa and Puttalam districts have reached 70% capacity. Trincomalee and Mannar districts report water levels near 45%.

Key developments include:

  • Anuradhapura District: Six sluice gates of the Rajanganaya tank are releasing 4,498 cubic feet per second into the Kala tank.
  • Ampara District: The Rottikulam tank is discharging 3,943 cubic feet per second into the Karanda Oya, with all medium-sized tanks in the district overflowing.
  • Hambantota District: Six spill gates of the Lunugamvehera Reservoir are releasing 1,788 cubic feet per second into the Kirindi Oya, while the Muruthawela Reservoir is releasing 937 cubic feet per second into the Uruboku Oya.

Heavy rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters has been recorded in parts of Ampara and Badulla districts, while other areas, such as Monaragala and Batticaloa, have reported significant rainfall. Low-lying areas are urged to remain vigilant as the risk of flooding persists.

The Department of Irrigation continues to monitor the situation and advises the public to exercise caution near spill-prone reservoirs.
