Aruna Kumara, Senior Professor of Crop Science at the University of Ruhuna, says that there may be a rice shortage by the middle of the year.
He said that this situation may arise due to a significant reduction in the expected paddy harvest in the Maha season.
The professor stated that the Maha season fulfills 65% of the country's rice requirement and that the expected harvest in that season this year has been informed to the gove ment.
He further said that this rice shortage may occur in the middle of the year due to the 4-month period that has now begun for the Yala season harvest.
