Adverse effect of the Online Act on Sri Lanka

The Asian Inte et Alliance, which includes technology companies such as Apple, Google, Meta, Amazon and Yahoo, has issued a statement regarding the bill on online security.

Accordingly, if the bill is implemented in its current form, it will adversely affect the growth of Sri Lanka's digital economy as well as foreign direct investment.

Human Rights Watch has also issued an announcement.

The relevant announcement states that the proposed draft poses a serious threat to the freedom of expression of Sri Lankans who are preparing for this year's presidential and parliamentary elections.

Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informed the Parliament yesterday (24) that the bill on the security of online systems was passed with amendments during the committee session.

There, 108 votes in favor and 62 votes against were obtained in the voting held after the debate on the second reading of the bill on the security of online systems.
