This year’s parliamentary elections have marked a wave of change, with nearly 150 of the 196 elected Members of Parliament being new to the legislature.
Remarkably, all 146 MPs elected at the district level are first-time representatives.
The National People's Power (NPP) Party leads this shift, winning 141 seats, of which 130 are newcomers. The Samagi Jana Balawega (SJB) secured 35 seats, including 8 first-time MPs. Other parties also contributed to the surge of new faces, with one new MP each from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), and three from the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK).
In contrast, all three MPs from the New Democratic Front (NDF) have prior parliamentary experience.
Additionally, with 29 national list seats yet to be appointed, many of which are expected to go to new MPs, the total number of newcomers in Parliament is set to exceed 150, marking a significant generational and political shift in Sri Lanka’s legislative body.
