Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department.

This was after he gave a statement in connection with an incident in which government funds were allegedly used for a private foreign trip.

The trip was made on September 22 and 23, 2023.

It is reported that ten people participated in the trip with former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Criminal Investigation Department has also taken steps to record statements from former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake and former Presidential Private Secretary Sandra Perera in connection with the relevant investigation.

This is the first time in the history of this country that a former president has been arrested.
