The US State Department has announced sanctions and visa restrictions against two prominent former Sri Lankan officials: Kapila Chandrasena, ex-CEO of SriLankan Airlines, and Udayanga Weeratunga, former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia.
The sanctions are linked to allegations of financial misconduct. Chandrasena is accused of accepting bribes to facilitate the purchase of Airbus aircraft at inflated prices, while Weeratunga faces allegations of overseeing a corrupt program to procure MiG aircraft for the Sri Lankan Air Force.
Both individuals, along with their family members, have been named publicly under Section 7031(c) of the US State Department. They are now prohibited from entering the United States.
This move highlights Washington’s ongoing efforts to address global corruption and hold individuals accountable for financial fraud.
