Vesak Full Moon Poya Day is a sacred religious day for Buddhists around the world and this year it is observed today (23).
There are many significance of the Vesak poya embraced by the Buddhist community.
The Buddhists commemorate Siddhartha Gautama’s birth, the enlightenment (Nibbāna) of the Buddha, and the passing away (Parinirvāna) took place on a Vesak Full Moon Poya Day.
On the other hand, Lord Buddha visited Kelaniya at the invitation of Naga King Maniakkhika on a Vesak Poya day like today.
Other than that, many important historical events took place on Vesak Poya day such as the arrival of Prince Vijaya and the commencement of the construction of Ruwanweli Seya by King Dutugemunu.
Not only in Sri Lanka but Buddhists all over the world have organized Vesak Zones, Dansal, Amisa Pooja, and Prathipaththi Pooja to celebrate Vesak Day.
