The Italian government has approved the construction of the world's longest suspension bridge, connecting the Italian mainland and the island of Sicily.
The 13.5 billion euro ($24.2 billion) project has been long delayed due to environmental conce s, earthquake risks, and mafia influence.
At a press conference in Rome, Transport Minister Matteo Salvini called the Strait of Messina bridge 'the largest infrastructure project in the Weste world.'
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said the bridge would be 'an engineering symbol of inte ational importance.'
