Dr. Priyantha Athapattu, director of the Ministry of Health's Tertiary Care Services Unit, says that about 350 doctors have gone abroad without being notified in the past nine months.
He also mentioned that the number of specialists estimated to be required to work in Sri Lanka is 2,837 and the number of doctors is close to 23,000.
He mentioned that 50 specialist doctors have left the country secretly and nearly 250 general doctors have gone abroad.
He also says that around 50 doctors have been blacklisted by issuing the order to leave the service to all those who leave the service without informing in a way that hinders the maintenance of patient care services.
He further mentioned that in the face of the huge economic crisis, relief should be given to the doctors who are still working in the country and the Ministry of Health is discussing about it.
