The war veterans will now require the Sri Lanka Defence Ministry's clearance for visit visas to Russia, Foreign Minister Ali Sabry stated on X.
This action will address the critical situation of Sri Lankans deploying in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
According to the Defence Ministry, nearly 600 Sri Lankan war veterans have been sent to fight in the Russia-Ukraine war. As of now, 16 Sri Lankans have died on the battlefield.
Some retired Army personnel have been arrested in the recent past for their involvement in trafficking Sri Lankans to Russia, promising financial benefits.
