The announcement for the upcoming local gove ment election is expected to be made after the conclusion of the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (A/L) examination, the Election Commission reported.
The Commission emphasized that issuing the announcement earlier would allow candidates to begin campaigning during the examination period, potentially disrupting the students. To avoid this, the announcement will be withheld until the exams are completed.
The A/L examination, which had been postponed due to adverse weather conditions, is set to resume this week.
Meanwhile, a special party leaders' meeting is scheduled for tomorrow (December 3) afte oon under the leadership of Minister Bimal Ratnayake, Leader of the House. The meeting will address matters related to the local gove ment election, including a decision on re-calling nominations.
Political parties have reportedly decided to cancel previously submitted nominations due to various issues, including candidates switching parties, emigrating, or withdrawing from politics. A final decision on the matter is expected during the meeting.
