The Leprosy Eradication Campaign has reported that 1,084 leprosy cases were identified in the first 10 months of this year. According to the campaign’s Director, Dr. Nirupa Pallewatte, 68% of these patients are capable of transmitting the disease to others.
The Colombo District recorded the highest number of cases, with 115 patients, followed closely by the Gampaha District with 113 cases.
Dr. Pallewatte also noted that around 1,500 leprosy cases were identified nationwide in the previous year, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and public health measures to combat the disease.
In a related statement, Deputy Director General of Laboratory Services, Dr. Priyantha Atapattu, urged the public to avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics, wa ing that it reduces drug effectiveness in treating diseases. Speaking at a media briefing organized by the Health Services Promotion Bureau, Dr. Atapattu stressed the importance of appropriate medical guidance for treatment.
