The Ministry of Justice says that steps are being taken to establish a new prison in the Welisara area.

The ministry stated that this step was taken to minimize prison congestion.

The ministry further stated that necessary steps are being taken to construct new buildings in prisons and transfer inmates to them promptly.

The Ministry further stated that the buildings of several state institutions have been selected and converted into temporary prisons.

Currently, over 39,000 inmates are being held in prisons.
