Minister of Transport Bandula Gunawardena says that the Cabinet has approved the deployment of electric buses in the vicinity of Colombo.
He also mentioned that he hopes to make a call for intent in the future.
This decision has been taken as a solution to the problem of increasing transport charges due to the increase in fuel prices as well as avoiding the damage to the environment caused by fossil fuels.
He further said that steps have been taken to close the loss-making depots owned by the Ceylon Transport Board in various parts of the country.
He also mentioned that the Ceylon Transport Board should be considered as a business and necessary changes should be made.
Apart from this, three-wheelers, vans and even other trains will be converted to run on electricity, he said.
It is also mentioned that electric three-wheelers are going to be deployed in the market by the private sector this year.
