Sri Lanka Cricket reiterates that Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera have been included in the 15-member squad selected by the Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee to participate in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.
The Cricket Selection Committee selected the initial squad which included both these players in a selection meeting held at the Sri Lanka Cricket Headquarters on 5th September 2023.
The selection was made while both players were recovering from injuries.
On the same day after the selection meeting, Sri Lanka Cricket sent the squad to the National Sports Selection Committee which is under the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.
In response, the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs has sent a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket on 26th September 2023 requesting medical clearance to approve the inclusion of Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera and Dilshan Madushanka.
In the end, after both Wanindu and Chameera recovered from their injuries, although they intended to send them to the Cricket World Cup with a plan to play at some point in the tou ament, Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement that it was not successful because the sports ministry did not approve of sending them without medical permission.
